The "People's Choice Awards" are voted on by the general public. The voting for these awards is hosted each year by some of the largest sites on the Internet, including CNET, Simtel, Tucows, PC World, and others. Software authors are also encouraged to point to the People's Choice Award voting site and encourage their users to vote! Voting takes place from May 1st through May 31st each year.

In contrast to the Shareware Industry Awards, where a program can only win more than once if it has undergone an update, a product may win the People's Choice Award multiple times regardless of updates.
